Non-Target Help

Hey Guys,

So I go to the University of South Carolina and I'm a sophomore Finance Major.

As of right now I have a 4.0 and I'm the member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. I'm really interested in getting into an IB program in NYC for my junior year internship but I know this is basically a shot in the dark. I know a lot of this will come down to networking.

I'm trying to get an internship at a Wealth Management group here in Columbia for the fall semester and hopefully another in the Spring.

How well will two internships look? Will it be even better if I could get one next summer?

Anything helps,

Thanks,

John

No one gives a shit about your fraternity.

As the guy above stated, try to transfer to a target or even semi-target. At your current school, even with a 4.0, your chances at IB in NYC are slim to none

Whatsup GDI?

Seriously OP, work your network. Sig Chi is HUGE and you'll definitely have alumni working in high finance. Its awesome because they dont have to be alumni from SC for you to contact them, being in sig chi is enough - bonus points if you find alumni from your chapter. They'll bend over backwards for you. Especially for someone with a 4.0

Not a GDI, just responding to the douchiness of him putting his fraternity as the second line of an introduction.

OP don't listen to the scrub above me, you have the credentials to transfer to a respectable school, so you should do it. It's not where you start your UG, it's where you finish and in the long run, finishing at a better school will pay off immensely

As people have already said, Sig Chi has a huge presence so hit the network at your school and others if necessary. Put the work in and you'll get what you want. Also, more internships you accumulate the better, as long as they are related to what you want to do (or can spin it to be related).

And to kind of echo what TechBanker said, don't act like Sig Chi is some great achievement, it should not have been mentioned so quickly, despite being a useful networking tool.

Fraternity arguments aside,

I have two family friends who work at a BB in NYC, and they told me their company hires non-targets fairly often. Yeah transferring to a target/semi-target might help, but if you like your school now, that's important as well. Network hard and keep up the good grades.

I REALLY think people are overreacting to him mentioning his fraternity here. He was just giving background about himself. If he had put "and I'm a member of the investment club" instead of his fraternity I highly doubt you all would be like WOAH PUMP THE BREAKS KID BEING IN SOME CLUB AINT AN ACHIEVEMENT!
