Non target recruiting/networking

Hello, just curious as a non target student on breaking in. I’ve been getting on calls with many analysts and associates both of whom are from my school (just one or two from each bank), as well as people that aren’t (targets including ivies, stern, etc) My calls with people from targets have been going well, and they are willing to introduce me to new people in the firm. But out of curiosity, I’ve seen posts say these people only really get to review applications and resumes of candidates from their own school. Does that mean as a non target student I can’t get referrals from them despite having good calls, and that they won’t have any influence in my recruiting process?

How exactly does this networking thing work?
