Non-target soph, trying to get an internship at a boutique in the NE Ohio area, input appreciated
Ok I'm typing this on my phone from work while I'm on lunch break so I hope there aren't too many mistakes. (I'd feel like a total jackass if I used their computer to post this)
Long story short, I'm a soph at a nontarget school and I'm currently interning part time at a F500 company in their purchasing department. I just started a week and a half ago so that is part of the reason it is so slow but even the more experienced interns don't have much work and the work is pretty damn boring haha. But I'm not complaining that much, the pay is great and they are flexible to my school schedule. And I'm technically getting corporate finance experience.
I'm technically only here through the semester but they implied that they would like to keep me through summer but I'm not bound and I wouldn't feel bad if I gave them enough notice.
Now that I have this on my resume it got me thinking maybe I should try for more this summer. I applied to a couple random places, like back office positions at BBs in the NYC area for the networking perks and some random places like Boeing.
But I got to thinking that maybe I should try boutique IB in my hometown. I saw a posting in my schools job page for unpaid IB in my college city that I will still apply to but I'd prefer to not pay rent if I'm working for free.
I've got spring break coming up so I'd like to try and sell myself and set up a couple interviews/meetings in Cleveland during that time.
I've looked at old threads on trying to snag an unpaid or low paying boutique job, but any tips for me?
Some highlights include: 3.65 GPA, 2110 SAT (will a Midwestern boutique even care about this haha?), 2 internships including the corporate finance one I have now. The other is not that amazing but can be spun fairly well. Well involved in school, a couple different clubs I'm heavily involved in. Honors program, etc...
Some downsides: I don't even have a PWM internship on my resume, will that hurt me that much?
I have no modeling experience at all, just looked at that free website macabus a couple of times. My school is hosting some intense program (maybe through Wall Street Prep?) like for a whole weekend in April that I was planning on telling the banks I was planning on going to that.
I only know basic excel, like vlookups and stuff. Not the crazy shortcuts you need for IB.
Might have a tough time selling myself but I'm going to try, there are a decent amount of banks in the NE Ohio area. Someone might take me on for free!
I've seen threads made by people in the past and some said they had offers/jobs to do boutique ib in the Cleveland area. I'm going to try and pm them later but anyone have tips on how to get into the office to sell myself for an interview.
I plan on building up a semi-relationship over email with some people in the banks with common interests/things (do some creeping on their colleges, try to find some common ground to initiate contact without seeming too creepy. Helloooo LinkedIn!). I'd just ask how they broke into the industry, tips, what they do, if they like what they do, etc...
Then should I call about possible internships and maybe coming into the office over spring break? How should I approach this? This is where I wonder how to exactly approach things.
Thanks!!
If you want to work in IB, you need to be applying to many places in the bigger cities. Working for a no-name in your hometown would be great, but the odds of actually making that happen are slim. Most boutiques in NYC will give you a stipend at the end of the internship to pay for your housing. NYU is probably the cheapest place to live for you. Don't worry about not having PWM on your resume, as it's a waste of time anyways. You should be applying to 20-30 banks in the major cities, before it's too late, and they already fill all the positions. If you don't get a single offer, that's fine since F500 as a sophomore is better than most people can do.
You probably already know this, but here's the banks in NE Ohio:
