Semi Target differences + help

Hi all,

I wanted to get a better understanding of how big the difference actually is between “semi target” universities in the UK, mainly for breaking into investment banking.

From what I have seen, universities in this bracket such as Durham, King’s, Nottingham, Bristol, Exeter and others are often grouped under the same semi target category. But, I am not sure how big the difference between them actually is, like, is there a substantial difference in going with Durham over Bristol for example?

Is the difference between these universities irrelevant and at that point,  outcomes are largely dependent on the individual (such as their CV) or are there noticeable gaps in terms of opportunities like spring weeks, summer internships, and overall placement into top firms?

One example I thought of was: if a Durham student has exactly the same extracurriculars, internships, grades, and society involvement as someone from Exeter/Manchester, which one is more likely to be given an interview? Will the one from Durham be given higher priority? Or are they broadly similar in terms of how they are perceived by recruiters, and all three students are given equal chances.

Furthermore, how substantial is networking in the UK? Aside from referrals to certain firms which are invite only, are societies, conferences, and events enough for networking or is there more to it?

Any answers would be appreciated.

Thanks
