First year ~$1.6k living with three other people. Second year moved into a one bedroom walk up for ~$2.1k where I lived for three years. Then a slightly nicer elevator/doorman one bedroom for ~$3.1k. I’ve always kept it right around or below the 40x rule using only my base which after 401k and taxes has normally been ~50% of take home until more recently.

Started at $1600 in 2010 with two other roommates.  Paid $2500-4000 for most of my late 20s for nice doorman buildings with roommate friend(when making Sr Associate/VP type comp), now pay about $10k/mo with spouse.  It sounds absurd but when compared to buying the place we live in, it's actually pretty reasonable and worth keeping the flexibility.  Things that don't matter at all in your 20s (i.e. large kitchen, area for a dining room table) start to matter more.
