NYU vs Johns Hopkins vs Emory
I'm a high school senior and I have narrowed my choices to NYU, Hopkins, and Emory. I am interested in a career in finance specifically investment banking and have to make a decision really soon. I know that NYU is the only real target school out of the three but I essentially have full rides at Hopkins and Emory whereas at NYU I would have to take a $30K+ per year loan. Having to take the loan worries me because there's always the chance that I change career goals. Is NYU's advantage in investment banking really worth going in debt? If not, which of the two other schools (Hopkins and Emory) would better position me for internships and career opportunities on wall street?

Yeah, $120k indebt doesn't seem worth it for easier networking.
I think Emory places decently well though you should definitely confirm that.

Hopkins has a great finance program if you can get into it with Professor Steve Hanke. He is able to open doors that Hopkins, as a whole, cannot.
I think you have a couple of decisions to make here. What type of college environment do you want? Being in NYC for college is drastically different than being in Baltimore or Atlanta. Have you visited all the schools?
Second, going into college stress and debt free financially is a great feeling. Don't burden yourself down with loans and debt repayment - NYU is not worth 120k compared to a free ride elsewhere. Not to mention, exteremly high living expenses in New York. If you are taking on loans, I assume money is a factor, so take that into consideration.
I wasn't able to visit NYU but visited the other two, liked Atlanta better but still enjoyed Hopkins. I've heard so many stories about college debt, and it definitely seems like something you want to avoid.
I think your decision should be between Hopkins and Emory personally.
The factors that would make me cross off NYU are the cost, location, and lack of traditional collegial environment.
Also, it is easier to stand out at Hopkins or Emory because you will not have as strong of competition such as that if you went at NYU where everyone is gunning for those positions.
Are you interested in research or career exploration? If so, take a look farther into Hopkins because they have an interdispinlary curriculum and insane research opportunities.
I should disclose I do not go to Hopkins, but I am very familiar with the school.
Cant really go wrong with any but for what its worth there are around 400 per class at Goizueta.
We send around 40 kids to NYC Ib. To be fair emory doesnt place that well into BB aside from Citi, the rest of the banks are no shows (this is for NYC). We still do send 1-2 student to every BB but thats probably due to alumni pull cause we don’t have OCR for them.
However we are solid school for EB and a target for lazard,pwp,guggenheim we send at least 1 student to every EB and lazard,pwp takes about 2-3 every year.
Also, our placement has been getting better and probably only gonna get better. That isn't to say we're a target school or anything close to that but def a strong semi target
But with all that Stern is of course a more target school but with a full ride I’d take Emory.
(Once again am a but biased but $120k vs free speaks for itself and JHU while a great research/pre-med school is a nontarget)
Emory is legit, they wont have the OCR of NYU but it is an all around excellent school. They place better in MBB vs Ibank and being in Atlanta that’s to be expected. My sibling went for MD/MBA. If you are die hard iBanking in NYC then go NYU, I wouldn’t do Hopkins regardless.
Emory also has a massive endowment for a southern private school, it has more money than Dartmouth and Cornell for instance and it shows. Per student it has more money than many others. Plus the women are southern and pretty hot in Atlanta. I froze my nuts off at MIT so yea I’m kind of jaded.
If you want to do banking in New York, avoid Emory at all cost. Unless you have family connections, but that applies to any college. However, if you don't mind banking in the southeast, Emory would be an amazing school. You will get a lot of traction in Atlanta for banking, MBB, and even PE straight out of college. Not sure about JHU, but I'm sure NYU does a much better job with OCR and helping students with recruiting. Emory career center is pretty passive and behind on schedule. No one on the recruitment team knows how to deal with the accelerated recruiting schedule. Still, there are plenty of kids who work extremely hard to get into EBs and BBs. The overall placement is decent but you'll have to really work for it.
