Odds I will be asked to leave immediately leaving to client?

2nd year analyst leaving to PE. Didn’t announce as my group has a history of paying sub par bonuses to people departing so I am waiting for the check to clear.

Work in a relatively niche coverage group and am leaving to a client in the same niche. We are currently engaged on two of their mandates and they are on almost all of our buyers lists.

Given potential conflict of interest, when I put in my two weeks, would you imagine my group will ask me to cease work or stick out the two weeks? Low key could use the vacation…

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your situation:

Potential Outcomes When Announcing Departure:

  1. Immediate Departure:

    • Given the conflict of interest (leaving to a client in the same niche), your group might ask you to cease work immediately to avoid any potential issues.
    • This is especially likely since you are currently engaged on two of their mandates and they are on almost all of your buyers' lists.
  2. Two-Week Notice:

    • While some firms might allow you to stick out the two weeks, the conflict of interest in your case makes this less likely.
    • If they do allow you to stay, your workload might decrease dramatically, giving you more time to prepare for your next role.

Considerations:

  • Bonus Payment:

    • It's wise to wait for the bonus check to clear before announcing your departure, especially if your group has a history of paying subpar bonuses to departing employees.
  • Vacation:

    • If you are asked to leave immediately, you could use this time as a low-key vacation before starting your new role.

Advice:

  • Prepare for Both Scenarios:

    • Be ready for the possibility of being asked to leave immediately.
    • Have a plan in place for how you will use the time if you are given an immediate departure.
  • Professionalism:

    • When you announce your departure, maintain professionalism and offer to help with the transition as much as possible, even if you suspect they might ask you to leave right away.

Example from WSO Threads:

  • In one thread, a user mentioned that offering a four-week notice as a sign of goodwill can help maintain relationships, even if the firm decides to roll you off your accounts immediately.

By considering these points, you can better prepare for the potential outcomes and ensure a smooth transition to your new role in Private Equity.
