Offer letter delays and ambiguity - please help.
I was recently offered a position in a BB. The hiring manager told me that I had done really well however, he couldn’t guarantee anything yet since they needed to undertake the internal HR approval processes - he said it was very unlikely there would be an issue. I was told I should expect a call from the HR to discuss compensation and that the offer would come through in 5-10 days at max. The first week was expected to be slow - however, Hr hasn’t reached out yet and I’m getting very anxious. I don’t want to come across as aggressive to the hiring manager since he’s been very reassuring however, I don’t know 1) If I should be worried 2) when should I reach out to him?
I know this is stressful but here are a couple of tips (you might not like them but they’ve helped me):
1) Don’t believe you have it until the day you start. Getting your hopes up leads to let-downs and crushes morale, which will only slow your ascent. Keep grinding and the roles will come — maybe even this one.
2) Just like it will be your job to turn comments / sell to clients all day once you begin, it’s HR’s job to get qualified candidates into their firm. Don’t feel bad about emailing them / following up. It’s their full time job to respond to your questions.
Good luck with the process and don’t be afraid to chase after it (but do give them the full 10 days before you follow up).
Thank you for your response - I’ve been directly coordinating with the team and the hiring manager so the HR hasn’t been involved in the conversation at all. The only point of contact I have is the hiring manager - he told me this week will be slow and I want to follow up since it’s been a week but don’t want to come across pushy/aggressive.
If your HR point of contact said he/she needs 10 days then definitely wait at least two weeks (10 business days) before sending a follow up, but do send the follow up as soon as that timeline is done because he/she very well may just need a reminder. Alternatively if you have contacts on a team at the firm maybe ask them to poke HR for you? Could be a gentler approach that you could take a week into the wait.
