Offer Rescinded - Feeling Lost
Intl at semi-target who recently landed an offer at a MM.
I was happy to have simply landed something in this environment as an international. Soon after, I got a congratulatory email from HR, followed by a question about my immigration status (given they did not mention specific work authorization req's in the initial job description) after I had simply mentioned coordinating with my university for some documents, which HR asked about.
I stated that I was on F-1 with eligibility for CPT and Stem OPT, so thought all was fine for the summer internship at least. Immediately, my offer was rescinded for not meeting their permanent work auth that they had been extremely vague about previously, and right after I was left with no further guidance.
Would really appreciate hearing any thoughts or advice right now - can't help but feel heavily down right now.
Sorry about Oppenheimer
MBA?
I'm in the same situation
I signed my offer early this year (Feb/Mar), and they just (Oct) told me they are withdrawing my offer.
Did they know you were intl when you signed in feb?
Name and shame please
Dude the country voted in Trump. Foreigners are not en vogue right now.
My advice is find something finance adjacent in your home country and if/when America swings back democratic, try to re-enter then.
Till then, keep ya chin up homie.
This may be the first comment you've ever made that didn't make me think "holy shit how is this guy so unlikable."
May be my first time ever giving you a SB - keep it up big dawg!
Bite me ya douche
They won't be en vogue even then under a democratic regime, this trend feels structurally excacerbated due to AI and tough labor markets
Just look at the wave of white collar layoffs in the past couple quarters (AMZN 30k jobs most recently). Going forward it'll be citizens vs non-citizens for a smaller jobs pie (best case the rate of jobs growth in white collar is positive but the rate will be slower vs. the past due to AI). And the citizens will win because the tide has now overwhelmingly turned against globalization with populism on the rise on both sides of the political spectrum.
Internationals who are looking to stay in the U.S. have missed the boat. Perhaps in a couple decades this trend reverses but I'm skeptical if AI continues getting better

Tech guy here, what's MM?
Middle Market. Firms with relatively smaller IBD practices that (generally) target smaller clients and often close fewer deals. Goldman Sachs is a Bulge Bracket firm (read top-of-the-market), there are around 7 BBs total. A large enough company (so not a boutique shop) that does smaller deal volume/size would be an MM firm, so HSBC or Wells Fargo or…
Gotcha gotcha, thanks :-)
WF ranks 6 for M&A now and T6 for global IBD revenue. IDK what are you saying sir.
You're full of shit. Middle market doesn't refer to a ranking, it refers to the size of the clients, i.e. MEDIUM sized. MM IBs also tend to close more deals than BBs because they're going after smaller deals, meaning they have to focus on volume.
The reality is that H1-B, L-1, F-1, etc. are all slowly going bye-bye. As someone else mentioned, I think your best bet is home-country and keep your ear to the grapevine here as well. But the trends don't look good. $100k fee for companies to hire outside. Most financial institutions have already shifted policy.
I'm deeply sorry, but the no sugarcoat answer, as others have mentioned, is to find something closer to your home country. Optics are awful for international right now. You went to a semi-target, and American universities are among the best in the world. You'll have a great life - this is just a hiccup. I even chose to leave the US voluntarily (I'm not liberal, so the election outcome has nothing to do with it), and I'm way happier abroad, and my neighbors seem infinitely happier than my neighbors back in the States. This could be a blessing, and as others mentioned, this too will pass, and you'll have opportunities to return later if that's what you desire. I'm rooting for you either way.
If you don't mind me asking, which country are you in? What specifically do you feel is much better about the new country? Genuinely curious
Any thoughts on your long term plan in 5-10yrs?
Im in the Philippines right now but I spend most of my time in Colombia, but until my citizenship gets approved, I can only live there 180 days out of the year to avoid double taxation. You’ll usually find me in Colombia, Brazil, Thailand, Italy, Philippines, Greece, Vietnam or New Zealand, but I would say I spend 75% of the year across Latin America or SEA just given the lower cost of living.
I enjoy the much lower emphasis on rampant consumerism, no toxic identity politics, less of a focus on grinding 24/7, all the processed garbage in the U.S. not being sold in the grocery stores, being able to get into a medical clinic same day, and paying no more than $40 out-of-pocket. My first year in business was solid - I profited about $80k, but in the U.S., especially in HCOL areas, this is not a great lifestyle, but in most other countries it’s top 1% wealth and luxury lifestyle. And from a personal standpoint, I met my partner in Latin America, and she is very feminine, nurturing and beautiful. I cover all the bills and take her on nice dates, but she makes sure I never have to cook, clean, do laundry, etc.. My last relationship in the U.S. was with someone similar to me (target school background, prestigious career), but after she quit her job, she did not contribute around the home at all, while expecting me to pay all the bills. I am not at all implying this applies to every Western woman, but I do think “traditional” partnerships are much harder to find in the West.
I never plan to move back to the U.S. My US home is pretty much on AirBnB 75% of the year. When I have kids, I’ll definitely make sure they’re enrolled in international school, but I will not raise them in the U.S. I don’t want my kids growing up thinking that rampant consumerism, burnout, broken healthcare, ultra-processed foods being part of a daily diet, gun violence in school, and hating someone for not voting the same as you is normal.
I’m very grateful to have been born in the U.S. and can’t understate how many amazing contributions to the global economy the U.S. has made, and the freedom of speech I’ll never take for granted, but I believe the negatives outweigh the positives in the U.S. now.
name and shame. The stupid slopulists do not understand that protectionism will only help accelerate decline of American empire by forcing capital to leave the states.
Sorry, that sux
guessing its william blair
Very sorry to hear this - you’re far from the only person in this position right now.
As said by others I’d probably recommend finding a role in your home country for now. Not sure what opportunities may be available where you’re from but any experience is better than none.
You proved to yourself that you’re qualified for the role so come back with a vengeance now and kill it.
After all who knows this may not have been the right opportunity for you, everything happens for a reason.
Best of luck OP!
They are using trump’s policy as an excuse to clamp down on TN visa too.
Any banks that allow international students with STEM OPT to work through the 3 year work authorization period?
That really sucks — I’m sorry you’re going through that. Unfortunately, these situations happen more than they should, especially with unclear work authorization requirements. It’s rough, but your skills and background still make you competitive; it’s just a matter of finding the right employer who understands your visa situation.
first of all, I have a frozen peak account with my main deck being made of level 8’s and whatnot. Levels don’t matter as much as the deck does. Another thing, try to ONLY upgrade the cards in your deck. That way you save coins, and also keep your exp low, therefore going against pretty bad people, or low level people. But my advice is to constantly battle and open chests. chests give a good amount, free chests are better than silver chests, golds are even better, but the best easy access chest is the crown chest. They are WAY worth it. And continue battling and winning for about 20 times. The gold from those wins add up to about 300 gold, and plus crown chest and other chest should be about 1000 gold per 24 hrs. Donations also help a lot too. Rares give 50 gold each so a clan with a lot of people in it should help a bunch too. and make SURE that if you have to leave or something, that your crown chest has at least 1 crown in it. After that, when 24 hours elapse, you can get 2 crown chests which is a LOT of gold. So make sure you are making the right “financial” decisions and upgrade the cards you need only in your deck. That’s one of the reasons there are level 5 people are in legendary arena. So as long as you are getting max gold every day and make the right decisions after a certain time, you’re going to have more than enough money for stuff.
