Onex Toronto 2025

There is so much negativity around this company but their stock price is at an all time high and the comp is as good as it gets in Canada.

If you are an IB analyst in Toronto (and intend to stay in Toronto) is there any reason not to take an associate offer from here? I get it’s a different story if you are working in NY because you have options.

I know their last fundraising round was bad but is there really no chance they bounce back? Just looking for some overall insight.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Onex in Toronto is considered one of the top private equity firms in Canada, especially for those looking to stay in Toronto. Here's a breakdown of the key points to consider:

  1. Compensation and Prestige:
Onex offers some of the best compensation in Canada, and its brand is highly regarded in the Canadian market. If you're an IB analyst in Toronto and plan to stay in the city, Onex is one of the top choices for maximizing comp and prestige.

  2. Exit Opportunities:
Onex provides strong exit opportunities within Canada, particularly in private equity and other buy-side roles. However, if you're considering moving to the U.S. or other international markets, the options may be more limited compared to working at a U.S.-based firm.

  3. Fundraising Challenges:
While it's true that Onex faced challenges during its last fundraising round, this doesn't necessarily mean the firm is in long-term trouble. Many firms experience ups and downs in fundraising, and Onex's strong track record and reputation suggest it has the potential to bounce back.

  4. Work-Life Balance and Culture:
Onex is known for long hours, which are typical for top-tier private equity firms. However, the hours are reportedly not as intense as some other firms like Brookfield. If you're prepared for the workload, this shouldn't be a dealbreaker.

  5. Toronto Market Context:
The Canadian private equity scene is heavily focused on the mid-market, and Onex is one of the few firms that operates at a larger scale. This makes it a standout option for those committed to staying in Toronto.

Final Thoughts:

If your goal is to remain in Toronto and you're looking for a top-tier private equity role with strong compensation and prestige, there’s little reason not to take an associate offer from Onex. While the firm has faced some challenges, its overall reputation and market position remain strong. If you're concerned about the fundraising issues, it might be worth doing some due diligence on the firm's current strategy and pipeline before making a decision.
