PJT RSSG Interview (Ass)

Have an interview with PJT RSSG - has anyone here been through their process before and willing to give some insights on what to focus on/how to prep?

I'm thinking of studying something like:

20% technical questions on general accounting / finance

10% M&A technical questions

30% Walking through recent RX deals / Market Views

20% Story / Fit Questions

20% Restructuring / Bankruptcy Questions

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can prepare for a PJT RSSG interview:

  1. Technical Questions (General Accounting/Finance - 20%):

    • Be over-prepared on technicals. Candidates have noted that being technically sound is crucial.
    • Use resources like the WSO guide, the 400 M&I question guide, and Rosenbaum & Pearl's materials for M&A and LevFin-heavy content.
  2. M&A Technical Questions (10%):

    • While M&A technicals might not be the primary focus for RSSG, having a solid understanding of LBOs, DCFs, and valuation methods is still important.
    • Practice mental math and reasoning behind transactions, as these are often tested.
  3. Walking Through Recent RX Deals/Market Views (30%):

    • Familiarize yourself with recent restructuring deals and market trends.
    • Stephen Moyer's Distressed Debt Analysis is a great resource for understanding the bankruptcy system and debt mechanics.
    • Review case studies like Houlihan Lokey's to get a practical overview.
  4. Story/Fit Questions (20%):

    • Be ready to articulate your story and why you're interested in restructuring.
    • Prepare for behavioral questions, as interviews with senior members (e.g., Partners) tend to focus heavily on fit.
  5. Restructuring/Bankruptcy Questions (20%):

    • Expect questions on IRR, tranches of debt, and how restructuring resembles a bond.
    • Be prepared for case studies, such as LBO or bankruptcy scenarios, where you'll need to analyze debt trading levels or justify purchase reasoning.

Lastly, remember that PJT RSSG interviews often combine technical and behavioral elements. For example, superdays may include multiple interviews with associates, VPs, and Partners, with a mix of technical and fit questions. Prioritize being well-rounded in your preparation to stand out.

You’re missing recent RX trends/developments: “liability management”, non pro rata up-tiering, Serta and controversial rulings (pros please chime in and add-on). I interviewed at the graduate level so obviously difficulty is way easier, but I went through the materials from Restructuring Interviews dot com which massively helped my preparation. The whole packet has advanced stuff even for laterals at the experienced hire level. I’d say don’t allocate “percentages” of importance and in turn effort exerted to each topic, just full send on everything that way you will be completely covered. Good luck!
