Please Roast my Networking Call

Hey guys - at this point I've been on maybe 100 calls, and they're getting a bit too routine for my comfort. I'm not connecting with anyone anymore on a personal level, so I wanted to recalibrate as SA recruiting starts hitting full force soon. Please roast my networking call

___________

Me: Hi X, thanks for taking my call, and thank you for your time.

Them: Thanks, how're you doing?

Me: I'm good, hope you had a good weekend. I want to be respectful of your time, so wanted to let you know upfront that I hope to get to know 1. about your experience (why the firm, why your group, why banking) 2. how your analyst/associate/VP experience has been 3. hear about your advice for students like me in the recruiting process. Does that sound good?

Them: great

Me: Let me start with a quick introduction blah blah blah. Would love to hear about yours.

Them: 5-10minute story

Me: questions in the middle (oh why did you choose that? Why did you go there?) Would love to hear about how your analyst experience has been - what is the group culture like? What do you like/what do you see as potentially a disadvantage?

Them: xyzxyz (questions in the middle)

Me: Sounds great. Before we hang up, would love to ask if you have any tips for the upcoming recruiting process and how I can position myself as a competitive candidate.

Them: read guides, send me your resume (like 5% of the time - would love to raise this to 20%+)...etc

__________

I've had better responses with this more "aggressive??" or maybe frank? approach, think people are too busy to deal with roundabout bs perhaps. But wondering what I can do to make my call more personable and have a better connection.

Not much to roast. Cold networking is hard. Cold networking with successful people is even harder. Especially during the pandemic when you don't get the face to face interactions. I'd just stay humble and soften language. Instead of "I wanted" say "I would like to...".

Speaking of networking, I've found good success using this website Yuumi www.yuumi.app. Even gotten some interviews out of there. If you can apply and get in, they match you up with a successful person 1:1 and it's better than cold calls because everyone is signed up to network.

Good luck cheers!
