possible to get through analyst years without modelling?

hate modelling, i know how to do it but hate how tedious it is and how easy it is to make mistakes / not do it right - rn at my bank i think most of the modelling (for live deals) is currently being done by assocs, is it possible to get through the 2 analyst years without modelling at all?

You don't like it because you are outside of your comfort zone. I was the same when I started out. If you are planning  on a long-term career in finance, there's no better time to learn modelling and technicals than in your early years where people will be a little more forgiving.

I have seen plenty of VPs and MDs who have sidestepped numbers their whole careers and it really shows.

My advice is to bite the bullet and face your fear of modelling. Yes you will fuck up, yes it will be stressful but most people have had to go through a similar experience. After a while you will also get more confident in your abilities and it won't seem as daunting.

I felt the same way but unfortunately, I got staffed on a few accounts where it was just me and a VP or Director due to lots of people in our group quitting. This basically forced me to learn how to model and honestly, once you find a few good templates that you can understand (there are tons of terrible models out there), just use that as your go to and plug in numbers / add rows where needed. Once you get the basics down, the VP or Director will kind of guide you the rest of the way by saying "add this" or "calculate that like this" and then it's really not daunting anymore. I think modeling will always be tedious, but it gets a lot more bearable once you get a few reps in.

Or learn it now, and be a better associate? Ultimately not being able to model will hold you back from being an effective banker, both junior and senior. The best senior bankers have the ingrained analytical "eye" for numbers, which comes from years of practice in the model. I would say bite the bullet and practice it more. It's kind of fun once you get over the "hump" and know what you're doing. I certainly prefer it to formatting logos in PPT...
