for a quant job, you'd definitely need lots of familiarity with math and/or computer science in addition to just finance. quants often have degrees in engineering, advanced maths, physics, etc.
I am an economics major and I am very interested in finance. I have interned at UBS, but not in the investment bank, so I figure if I do not get a full time offer in banking, I might just get a masters in finance or financial engineering and pick up a CFA.
My other option is to stick around an extra semester, try to get an internship, and then go for a full time position.
What do you think?
Why didn't you get in to the IB in the first place?
You have to think, after doing the Masters you will be applying for Associate spots. How are you going to out do those that have 2-3 years experience in the bank, have done an MBA at a top school and are coming back?
You are at a disadvantage in terms of experience and the Masters makes you over-qualified for an analyst position. Unless you are moving in to more of a S&T/Quant role, I can't see how the Masters is going to help. The more study you do, the more obvious it becomes you haven't got any relevant experience.
Likewise with the CFA. Great for reseach jobs, not so much for banking.
thanks for your comments
beaker, when you say a quant role, what exactly do you mean by that?
Quant role: PhD's and crazy smart people locked in a dark room.
Math specific trading, black box... that sorta stuff. Sometimes research orientated. More to the point, a skillset that is the antithesis of banking.
