How do I align the top edge of an object to the bottom edge of an object so they are stacked ? Similarly, How do I align the right edge of an object to a left edge of an object?

Insert a line and align it vertically with two other objects. It should all snap together and then just delete the line.
Agreed, dummy objects are the best workaround to most alignment issues.
