Pre-Interview Dinner Conflict
I have invitations to pre-interview dinners to two of my top choices this coming Sunday. However, one starts at 6 and the other lasts from 6:30-8:30. What do you guys think is the best way to handle this situation? Should I just skip one dinner altogether or should I go to the one at 6 and leave early AND be late to the second dinner? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
If it were me, I'd just go with the choice that I desire more and focus all of my time and energy on being there and killing it. Leaving early/coming late may be construed as a lack of interest on your part or being disrespectful. UNLESS, however, you can adroitly spin some story that enables you to go to both...but I wouldn't risk it.
Agree with King. Pick one and stay the whole time, maybe longer, and kill it. For the other, just say you have a conflict. It might be good to ask to do some sort of "make up" for the one you miss, perhaps a phone conversation with someone from the dinner. They might say no, but it still shows initiative in interest.
Agree with everything that has been said, even go further than asking for a "make up" phone conversation and propose meeting for coffee. Face time goes along way if you can get it.
I'm pretty sure the banks do this on purpose to see how bad you want it vs a peer. They know that the other banks are doing events on the same day. While you can always ask for a make up, I'm pretty sure they know the reason you skipped was to go to another event. I'd pick not just the one I wanted more but also factor in the one where you think you have a better shot. It's a game of probabilities so maximize your odds.
.
Definitely pick your top choice and only go to that. I'd actually pick the better bank, not what you think you have a better chance at. But have a good story for why you couldn't come to the other banks dinner. Best excuse is, you got invited to bank A before bank B and had already rsvp'd before you received bank Bs invitation.
