Preferred form of Networking: LinkedIn Message or Email

I'm currently doing my networking for banking and just wanted to see what you guys prefer. Would it be better to send an email asking to connect or connect through LinkedIn and add a message to it?

For anyone who has been in one of these positions where you are constantly getting asked to connect or hop on a call what do you prefer/ are more likely to respond to?

P.S. thanks for all the time you take to network with students like myself.
