I'd say Investment Banking is considered more prestigious in the US, whereas in the UK becoming a Trader is more sought after. Possibly due to the greater weight attached to a reasonable work-life balance in Europe.
I'm in the US and none of my non-finance NYC friends give two craps about my job. They think I'm a moron for doing this to myself when there's more productive uses of my time out there. So it's not just an Iowa thing to be indifferent towards banking.
