Profile Critique

Hi all, Tell me what you think of this profile? Is there a chance at I-banking?

GPA: 3.8 | senior non-target school. Major: Fin + Econ. No significant extracurricular activities. Expected Internship at a BB PWM.

I know that the above information is all I can put in a resume, but I feel the need to describe my situation which will be in the form of a cover letter.

Due to a family situation, I worked full-time and went to school full-time. My work is not related to finance. I grew up in an African country that suffered a civil war. Since my father was a victim of this war, I had to work while going to High-school to support the family. I managed to get here to study and also managed to get my family here, thus, the full-time work to support them.

Also, when I came to the US, I had to study English, which I successfully did in one year.

I hope this doesn't come off as a complaint, but: Do I have a shot at IB at all? Or should I just be satisfied with a PWM opportunity?

You are definitely going to have a very tough time. As the above poster said, try to leverage to PWM position into something closer to banking - mid office, etc and then try to run from there, or go for a boutique. Honestly, your problem is that your story is a good one, an inspiring one, but bankers won't care too much (on an emotional level maybe, but not a professional). Business school, on the other hand, would definitely love your story. With your grades, I would start to get some serious ECs and volunteer work going, take the PWM position and work there for like 2-3 years - then go to a strong B school. From there, you will have a much easier time breaking in to banking (if not BB, then MM or boutique).

UBS PWM hands down.

Also look into SEO as a way to get into banking

Regardless of what happens now, you have a great future ahead. Banking is all about pedigree. But other people in other institutions – especially elite Business schools like Harvard – will LOVE your story. Work hard, build your resume out and take the GMAT. You will end up in a great B-School and get your pick of jobs in a couple years.
