RBC does very well within pubfin, historically in the top 5 of league tables, my impression is that the rest are volume-oriented shops. PM if you are interested in pubfin and recruiting for it

Based on the most helpful WSO content, public finance teams at middle-market (MM) firms like Piper Sandler, Baird, RBC, and Stifel generally focus on municipal bonds, infrastructure financing, and other public sector-related deals. Here's a breakdown of the key aspects:

Prestige

  • Public finance is typically considered less prestigious compared to traditional investment banking groups like M&A or TMT.
  • Among MM firms, the prestige largely depends on the firm's reputation in the public finance space and the size of the deals they handle. For example, Piper Sandler and RBC are often regarded as stronger players in this area.

Hours

  • Public finance tends to have better work-life balance compared to other IB groups. Hours are generally more manageable, with fewer late nights and weekend work.
  • However, this can vary depending on the firm and the specific team.

Culture

  • MM public finance teams are often described as having a more collegial and laid-back culture compared to larger bulge bracket firms.
  • The focus on public sector clients often attracts individuals who are mission-driven or interested in public policy, which can create a more collaborative environment.

Exit Opportunities

  • Exit opportunities from public finance are more limited compared to traditional IB groups. Common exits include:
    • Roles in municipal advisory firms.
    • Public sector finance roles (e.g., state or local government finance departments).
    • Infrastructure-focused private equity or consulting roles.
  • Moving to traditional private equity or hedge funds is less common due to the niche nature of the skill set.

If you're considering public finance, it's important to weigh your long-term career goals and whether the sector aligns with your interests. While it may not offer the same prestige or exit opportunities as other IB groups, it can provide a fulfilling career path with a better work-life balance.
