Question : Can non-alum analysts/associates/VP/MD refer you?

really curious about that. For instance, if our school is not a target for one of the EB and no one from my school goes there, should i still network and apply?

Absolutely, you should still network and apply! Based on the most helpful WSO content, referrals are not limited to alumni connections. Non-alum analysts, associates, VPs, and even MDs can refer you if you build a strong connection with them. Here's why and how to approach it:

  1. Referrals Aren't Exclusive to Alumni: While alumni connections are a natural starting point, many professionals are open to helping if you demonstrate genuine interest, shared values, or a strong story. For example, some bankers may resonate with your hustle, background, or shared interests, even if you're not from their alma mater.

  2. Networking Beyond Alumni: If your school isn't a target and no alumni are at the firm, get creative:

    • Reach out to professionals with similar career paths, interests, or even those from nearby schools.
    • Use LinkedIn to identify individuals who might relate to your journey (e.g., those from non-target schools themselves).
    • Engage with professionals who have posted insightful content or participated in webinars/events.
  3. Cold Outreach Works: Many WSO threads highlight success stories of candidates from non-target schools landing interviews through cold emails and networking. Even if someone isn't an alum, they can still refer you if they believe in your potential. A well-crafted email or LinkedIn message can open doors.

  4. Be Persistent and Strategic:

    • Tailor your outreach to show you've done your homework about their background and the firm.
    • Build rapport by discussing shared interests or asking thoughtful questions about their career.
    • Always ask for referrals tactfully, such as, "If you think my background aligns, would you feel comfortable passing my resume along?"
  5. Why You Should Still Apply: Even if your school isn't a target, networking can help you bypass the low odds of landing an interview through online applications alone. A strong referral can significantly boost your chances.

Remember, networking is about building genuine connections, not just asking for favors. So, yes, non-alum professionals can absolutely refer you, and you should leverage every opportunity to network and apply!
