Quitting a job due to mental health issues

Hey everyone - this community has been super supportive and I appreciate it. Wanted to get your guys' advice on the best way to quit a job. Been working at a boutique banking firm for a few months now but I've had a pretty tough time mentally. Battling depression and have had a history of binge eating disorder, along with some family issues back home. The days are getting tougher and tougher and I really think I need some time to reset and reflect. What do you guys think? How would you have this conversation with your manager?

Great, thanks! Quite a lot of attention and time is now given to family online therapy in order to avoid or eliminate internal family conflicts. At https://drmental.org/blog/best-online-family-counseling I read a useful and constructive article about online family therapy, about its impact on each family member. Online counseling is useful, and it is a short process that offers long-term solutions to problems faced by many families around the world. Unlike regular face-to-face counseling, virtual family counseling leads to less confrontation, making it highly effective.

I’m struggling with this now, I quit during a manic episode and haven’t been able to make my way back with the current market dynamics. Would love your advice, it’s been a tough pill to swallow

Not sure if you'll see this - but I'm curious if you developed any routines or coping mechanisms that allowed you to re-enter the industry successfully - coming from someone also with BP. Thanks!

I have been in banking two years plus and I have been battling severe anxiety and I would say depression too. I gained over 20 pounds since becoming analyst 1 (I got help and lost them but I still binge eat when I am stressed). I don’t have the exact answer but I want to remind you of a few things:

  1. You may be setting very high and unrealistic expectations for yourself. You will not know everything right away. You will never be perfect and you are not expected to know everything
  1. It is totally fine to take walks every day at lunch or try to meditate in the morning. When the shit hits the fan for me, I stop working and close my eyes and meditate or cry in the bathroom and try to take a step back. When depression or anxiety hits you stop working, just stop and take a breath
  1. Use your firm’s resources and get therapy. I still talk to my therapist every other week (used to be every week)
  1. Do you have a good team? If you do, communicating more might make the job less stressful ( for example more clarity on tasks and deadlines etc.)
  1. Get a mentor. Vp or above. Ask them how they plan their work and deal with stress. You get so much clarity on what really counts and what you can do to be better

If you have depression, it is likely to happen at any job, I would suggest trying to find what works for you first then if still feels too much then quit. If you want to talk to someone, pick someone who is reasonable and will be understanding. Good luck
