Quitting after a week?
Not sure what to do. Dream since undergrad has been IB but couldn’t cut it at the superdays so I did big 4 accounting and lateraled to a pretty well known boutique for which I had to move across the country for (5 months left on my lease) and have been employed for a week. Now the BB I really wanted (in the city I just moved away from) wants to finally interview me after I networked for like a year with but they’re just a month too late to the table. I already just turned down an interview from a MM I also really wanted. Would y’all at least interview with the BB? I have already signed a lease in my new place of residence. I’m from the south.
No harm in taking the interview IMO, but I would be up-front with them about your situation. You need to consider the trade-off with burning this particular bridge. If this MM is a major player, then I would think twice - as reputation will come back to bite you unexpectedly. How long is the interview process? Will you be hanging around your existing job for another month? What is the likelihood of an offer? In addition, think of the incremental benefit to your career goals: if you want PE/MF, then there is a stronger argument to be made. I’d categorically list out pros and cons - I personally would be very careful, but I’m particularly sensitive to reputation
I totally would. You can always sublet or break lease with some fee
If it’s a pretty well known boutique you’ll still get good exit ops.
IMO lateralling to a BB should be easy after 1 year if you network. Given you’d already moved, I’d stick it out for 6-12 months and lateral
No harm in doing an interview. BB IB is still competitive at the end of the day right.
I'd take the interview even if it is just for the practice. At the end of the day, leaving your job so quickly for another job is a little suspect. I don't think the impact from the firm you are leaving will be huge (ie blacklist or retaliation), but it may be suspect to future employers who see that on a resume. Unless the BB team is different and better, I'd probably stay at the MM. If you are moving from DCM to M and A at a BB, that may be a different story.
Imo, it’s worth it. Everyone’s going to have different opinions on this, and there are pros and cons to either option. Just think about what would be best for you, because it depends on which firms they are and which networks you have. Im a little biased because back in my UG days I reneged a few offers, including BBs, but I went to a top target so I wasnt too worried, and I ended up doing very well. Think about yourself not your firm.
