Rapid deterioration in health

Putting this out there to see if others have any advice on how to mitigate health problems associated with recent elevated hours.

Second year analyst at MM - group is understaffed and hours have kicked up and been consistently around that 90 hour mark for months now. Noticing rapid weight loss (dropped 15 pounds in 2 months), elevated heart rate (88 “resting” bpm as of late; +20 bpm compared to when I started the job), loss of appetite, chest pain, etc.

Anyone else dealt with similar issues? If so, did you just quit to save yourself or did you come up with systems to feel better?

Plz help lol

I had rapid deterioration in physical and mental health - on heart side - had chest pain (especially after working 90+ in a week), high resting heart rate, high heart rate variability. Also had GI issues - ulcers, bloody stool, stomach pain.

Exited to something mid with good hours (think corp dev) just to get out, don’t regret it at all. I feel a million times better and the high hours were the direct cause of all my health problems.

Lack of sleep is hard to compensate for, no matter how many supplements or “systems” you try to add.

I think you might be dealing with psychological stress (part from lack of deep sleep to recover), so that said I would first try some supplements that could at least support your health and see how it goes: magnesium, zinc, creatine, L-theanine, taurine, omega-3, and vitamin D. I would also focus on consuming natural sugars every 2–3 hours to keep cortisol in check and rely more on glucose rather than adrenaline. Would also quit nicotine (Zyns) because it's adrenaline.

I wouldn’t be as concerned about losing weight, as I think it has more to do with having a structured eating routine within certain windows vs. binge eating when home/unstructured routine.

If possible, try to increase WFH days for better sleep, and leverage AI tools to do in 30 minutes what might otherwise take an hour, so you can use some extra 30 minutes a day to decompress. Social life around office also helps to decompress (socialize more / joke more if you don't do it).

Health deterioration happens when damage > recovery, so either reduce the damage or increase/support recovery.

You just need to change job. Leaving these stupid hours was the best decision I made. Just find a good enough shop in PE or other career and once you get consistent 7-8h of sleep at night and are able to hit the gym you’ll realize how this prestige thing is all BS. Too many people in banking get to 40-50 with their health completely fucked up

As the other person said there is absolutely nothing that can compensate the lack of sleep. Nothing

I would recommend doing something off line about this. It’s possible none of your in person colleagues have noticed your health issues. It may be wise to speak to someone in HR, your associate, MD whatever that the workload is starting to take too much of a toll on you. A colleague with health issues doesn’t help anyone. We all want healthy colleagues as that’s what’s best for them, the firm and the clients.

I feel like speaking with MD or even associate or HR about it will lead to a layoff, cause they'll just "counsel you out" cause they'll think you're not cut out for IB due to your health, and they don't want to risk having someone dying due to the job and damaging their reputation, but they'll phrase it as a genuine concern about you.

My approach would be to just push back against the workload and maybe even do your job worse so you get less of it.
