Real Estate IBD

All, had the chance to get a full time position at a BB within the Real Estate group. I managed to get the offer after an experience in Real Estate brokerage. I am not an expert of listed companies and M&A, and currently freaking out about my start date.

For the RE bankers here, any useful resources I should have / read to train to be effective asap?

To prepare for your role in a Real Estate Investment Banking Division (IBD) at a bulge bracket (BB) bank, here are some actionable steps and resources based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Understand Real Estate Financial Modeling:

    • Take a real estate modeling course or a general financial modeling course like Training the Street. These courses will help you understand how to model property cash flows, returns, and valuations effectively.
  2. Learn the Basics of Real Estate Investment:

    • Familiarize yourself with how different property types (retail, office, multifamily, etc.) generate income, including concepts like Net Operating Income (NOI) and cap rates.
    • Books like The Real Estate Game and Real Estate Finance and Investments are highly recommended for foundational knowledge.
  3. Brush Up on M&A and Listed Companies:

    • Since you're transitioning from brokerage, focus on understanding M&A processes, valuation techniques (DCF, Comps, LBO), and public company analysis. The WSO Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp (2-day) is a great resource for this.
  4. Networking and Industry Insights:

    • Connect with professionals in the industry to gain insights into the day-to-day work and expectations. Use LinkedIn or WSO forums to reach out to others in similar roles.
  5. Build a Professional Library:

    • Start collecting resources and books that can serve as references during your role. This will help you stay informed and prepared for any technical or strategic challenges.
  6. Practice Excel and Technical Skills:

    • You don’t need to be an Excel wizard, but ensure you’re comfortable with financial modeling and analysis. Practice building models from scratch to improve your speed and accuracy.

By focusing on these areas, you’ll be better equipped to hit the ground running in your new role. Good luck!
