Recruiters asking the pay of previous internships

Hi All, Can a recruiter/interviewer ask the how much was I paid in previous internships? Can they actually demand the contract as proof? Have I some sort of right of non disclosing such information? (btw I live in Europe) Thanks

Yes they can ask and yes they could ask to see proof but I've never heard of this. They'd be calling you a liar and that would just hurt the relationship. Yes, you have the right to refuse or say you're not "comfortable disclosing it". Worst case you can give them a ballpark provided its reasonable. Walking into an IB interview an saying you got 10K/mo at your previous internship won't do you any good.

thanks, surely I won't be the one saying about the salary, my concern comes from the fact that I'll do an internship at a veeery small local shop, no application process, and I doubt I will receive a written proof (e.g. offer letter) apart from the contract, which I believe I cannot disclose. At this point, will they ask for contact details of the employer? Or they want written proof?

I friend of mine found himself in the same situation, and asked his previous employer if he could disclose the past contract in a redacted form (i.e., he with his former employer’s hr deleted all the sensible info) and provided the new company with the contacts necessary to verify his statements. Hope it helps (I’m European too btw)!
