Recruiting FT IB
I recently got a IB internship for 2026 at a smaller MM bank. It’s still in NY but what are my chances for recruiting after the summer is over for a FT position? I also don’t go to a target school - still T10 business school but nowhere near Wharton/Ivy level. Has anyone declined their return offer and tried recruiting elsewhere?
Again, just focus on getting your return offer. Network last 2 weeks. If you don’t get a return you genuinely may never do banking again. It’s still a tough market so. There are so many great shops that FT recruit after summer internship.
bump
i def agree w/ sentiment above about trying as best as you can for RO although ill share story as i just came out of FT recruiting w offer at MM
i 1000% agree with everything u see on this website about how tough it is. and fwiw i didnt even intern in IB (was in FP&A at F500) and dont go to a target nor a T10 (or T20 for that matter) although it is a known school with wall street presence if that helps at all.
id say theres both the technical toughness and id definitely admit theres a bit of luck involved. for interviews, it was extremely extremely technical (although this couldve been due to a non IB internship and they wanted to make sure i was competent but who knows).
There were many rounds and it wasnt as straightforward as it wouldve been for SA, and I even had culture fit calls after SD as well. if say the luck comes in because u dont really know whos going to run a process. most banks arent taking a class like they do for SA and its very one off hiring for sectors/teams (as was the case for me). and because it moves so fast u need to have the network established beforehand so u can have that pull.
i was fortunate to have been networking w bankers on the team beforehand so it worked out but thats the hard part IMO because at least w SA u network knowing firm is going to open apps, etc, whereas with FT it can feel endless and/or pointless and ur truly doing it for the end all be all luck that the team takes a FT analyst.
ill end off w the interviews are also very focused on the space as well so if ur interviewing for HC coverage u better know a high level of the space like the back of your hand, or if its a product group like DCM have ur bond math rly sharp. which is why i recommend you really target recruiting very tight since itd be impossible to learn every single sector and vertical well enough
how many rounds did u have? also went thru it this year and it went 1R->SPD->offer
R1 -> R2 -> R3 -> SD -> informal Call w/ 2 VPs -> informal call w/ MD
I do know that other teams at my bank didnt run a process this deep but it could be a coverage vs. product thing (i know the teams they took more than one person were in were coverage)
ran the gauntlet lol congrats, can you elaborate a little more on what the dcm teams at mm's are doing?
