Reference checks

When requested for references, am I expected to list my most recent internship experience director as a reference? What if I didn't have a super strong or positive relationship w/ him because the internship was remote? Can I list professors, classmates I have worked on models/projects with, advisors instead?

Additionally, are we really expected to have references as a college freshman/sophomore?

Does it say “you must list your MD as a reference” ? Of course not….

This is a very halfwitted question. You can list whoever you want obviously. List whoever you think will speak highest of you.

For example: I listed my college professor, high school principal and finance mentor.
