Rejection Email Wording

I had a first-round interview for SA 2024 that I thought went well, but I didn't hear back for 1.5 weeks, so I sent a follow-up to my interviewer.

They responded, saying "Given the challenging environment, we cannot offer you a spot right now but will let you know if that changes".

Are they just being nice with the wording, or could it be genuine? I thought the wording for rejection would be more along the lines of "we have decided to move forward with other candidates". Thanks in advance.

imo they are just being nice with the wording. I have received my fair share of "sorry but we will let you know if anything changes!" emails. I never heard back from any of them. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but sometimes it's better to just accept it and move on instead of clinging on to false hope.

Not to say that it's impossible, just that in my experience, it never led to anything else.
