Jimmy Lee passed away this morning. For those of you who aren't familiar, he was a stalwart of the Street and embodied the character traits that all bankers should try to emulate.
Decided to write this post because of the amount of sadistic pleasure in his death that I've seen in some of the comments in news stories online. Far from being a Gekko or Belfort, Mr. Lee was a genial gentleman, and it upsets me to see this slander. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Lee and getting to hear him speak last year. Aside from being star struck as a young college student, the wisdom espoused during his speech was impacting and will be carried forward.
Everyone at the speech got a card with Jimmy's 14 Steps to Success. Here they are:
1. Character is everything.
2. Become known as a trustworthy person.
3. Become great at your craft.
4. Relationships matter. Learn how to build and maintain them.
5. Develop good judgement and learn how to make the right decision.
6. Lean how to resolve conflicts.
7. Family comes first.
8. Be crazy organized and prepared.
9. Be the person that everyone wants to work with.
10. Develop great working habits.
11. Learn how to win gracefully and pick yourself up when you loose.
12. Treat everyone with respect regardless of their walk of life.
13. Demonstrate pride in your company and what you do.
14. Dream big.

I worked at JPM for the better part of a decade and Jimmy Lee was simply larger than life. He was the consummate dealmaker and an even better person. He was proof that EQ wins the day in an industry full of high IQ/average EQ personalities. God bless him and may he rest in peace.

Wish I could have met the guy, sounds like he was exceptional. Wall Street just isn't the same and this doesn't help, even the journal just isn't the journal anymore. Guess we can't bring back the golden days
