It depends, but I reneged an offer and it was an amazing decision. Have had a couple of friends do the same and they've had no negative consequences and ended up in much better roles

Not a great idea, but do what is best for you. Be aware that your bank will likely stop recruiting at your school and you may be barred from using OCR if you renege, so only do so if you really think you have to. I wouldn't renege a low BB offer to go to a slightly higher BB, huge reputational risk and those banks' employees know each other, but would say tiny boutique to BB/EB is potentially worth it, or if you've decided the WLB is not for you and pursue a totally different direction.

Don't renege without an offer in hand, and when you do so don't tell them where you are going or put "incoming XX analyst" on LinkedIn.

Yeah, this is true too. I did have one friend who got a talking-to from the recruiting office at our school, but at the end of the day they couldn’t really do anything other than yell at him a bit. Everything ended up totally fine and he’s in a much better role now

Banks generally don’t care unless it’s to bounce for another bank. If you’re leaving for a different industry, just explain that you decided banking wasn’t for you. They’ll be slightly upset but will get it.
