Renege sophomore internship after signing Junior SA

Just signed at a top MM bank for SA26, but have a incoming sophomore internship in at a small FOF that I can’t really do anymore and don’t want to do. On resume when I applied but never came up in interviews/networking.

Got the soph internship from LinkedIn w/o networking and easy interviews back in October. Was initially excited to do it but things have changed in terms of financial situation which makes me unable to relocate to the city it’s in and pay isn’t enough to afford HCOL for the summer. Also I’m a D1 athlete and don’t want to miss out on training like I did for past internship.

Would it be bad look for junior SA to renege on sophomore internship? How can I communicate this best with HR?

It’s understandable to want to prioritize your summer analyst role at a top MM bank, especially given the financial situation and your D1 athlete commitments. While reneging on an offer isn’t ideal, it’s better to be upfront and professional.

You can communicate this by being honest with HR. Let them know that due to changes in your financial situation and personal commitments, you’re unable to take the sophomore internship anymore. Express gratitude for the opportunity they offered and apologize for the inconvenience. Most firms will understand, especially given that you were transparent and communicated early on. Just make sure to do it as soon as possible to avoid any confusion.
