Restructuring Advisory & consulting

Im interviewing with a firm that described themselves as Restructuring and Turnaround Advisory and Consulting.... What exactly does that mean? banking hours and consulting travel...? I havnt met too many ppl who have ever heard about them, but they are on The Deal league tables under NonInvestment Banks. Im a little confused what to expect this position to be like... and thus preparing for the interview.

Can anyone advise?

I'd think that it would be like consulting except a little more intense, maybe more quant driven. I wish I could give you advice for the interview but if you've prepared for IBD or Consulting stuff before you'll be fine.

I'm going to guess it's Huron, FTI, or Alvarez & Marsal.

Prepare for your interview just as you would any case interview. Don't forget fit though... When I interviewed for one of the above, it was 100% fit.

Actually firms such as Huron, FTI, and Alvarez & Marsal focus on more than just the operational side with regards to restructuring. They are typically hired by either the company going through the restructuring or the unsecured creditors. While I will not start my full-time at one of the firms mentioned above, I do know that they perform many tasks similar to investment banking. Granted it is not purely transaction based, they do analyze information such as liquidity issues, company valuation, working with potential buyers in the case of a diverstures, etc.

Now in terms the interview, I would say they are half fit and half technical. Throughout my interview they asked me tech. questions such as how do you come up with the cost of equity, If X increases in cash account what happens to you liabilities, etc. Also be ready for case questions as well. They like to test how you think on your feet.

Best of luck. This is a great industry to go into right now.

its actually none of those. its a smaller, not as well known shop. I really have no idea what to expect, but Im def excited with the idea of getting into this field in such an opportune market. They bill themselves as both restructuring and turnaround. SOme of their head execs have even served as C-level officers for some firms they were advising/consulting. On their web site I see alot of bankruptcy type stuff... working for creditors, being appointed by bankruptcy court, advising management in struggling companies, etc... Ive never gone into an interview knowing so little before about the place before.

it ended up going well. Threw a decent amount of technicals at me. but nothing I didn't claim to know already, so I did well.

A little disappointed to know that they're not actively looking to hire (since I cold emailed them). Also pissed that I spent the better part of my morning interviewing for a position that doesn't exist... I was told that they are impressed and will reach out to me when the need arises and hopefully both of our time lines will be compatible.

as it turns out they did end up inviting me back...

my only question is.... since this is a relatively unknown company and not too many people are working for similar companies, how can I find out what the comp is? Im sure the base will be comparable to what Im getting in my current position in BO at a BB.... but how can I get an indication of what the bonus range is... since that will make a considerable contribution to the total comp(hopefully)
