Restructuring advisory (huron consulting group) vs. boutique IB
How does a summer after sophomore year in restructuring advisory in huron consulting group look compared to a boutique investment bank/PE shop if your goal is to get an SA at a BB the summer after junior year? How about for MBB?
It seems as though Huron Consulting Group's restructuring isn't really "consulting" but then again, it's a consulting firm (so BB's may look down upon it because it's not "banking related"). It's name obviously would look better than a boutique right?
I am just confused about how BB's and MBB's look at past experience. For example, I keep hearing that MBB's look down upon anything that is consulting unless it's one of the MBB's. Does it matter if it's only the summer after sophomore year?
Any experienced professionals in these fields that would like to chime in? Thanks
anyone have any ideas?
hey man, can't speak for MBBs, but I think either experience would be solid... I did boutique M&A my sophomore summer and during my interviews, people loved the experience (granted I spun it well, don't mean to brag ;)...
you're in a better position than most of your peers... with that said, I would personally pick the boutique experience (if they are legit enough and have good deal flow), because it will give you easier time answering "Why Banking" and you can talk about a few deals you've worked on, but I don't know too much about Huron (or their Restructuring Practice)...
bump
I'm sorry, but I would really like to know.
Here's the thing... Huron may have a better known name, but how relevant will the experience be for what you're looking to get into? Imagine what your resume will look like after the summer, and ask yourself how each will contribute to getting you BB interviews.
Huron may be the better known name, but Coke-A-Cola is the better known name among the three... is that to say you should intern at a Coke bottling plant as a shift janitor? I'm not saying the Huron opportunity may not be a valuable one, but unless you know you're going directly into a specific group at Huron... I'd take the boutique bank internship. I'm assuming this is a reputable albeit not well known boutique bank.
The bottom line is, you want to make sure you have valuable and relevant experience which will move your candidacy forward.
100% go boutique...
