Rice/Cornell?
Hi, I have a guaranteed transfer for sophomore year to Cornell's undergrad biz program...but my family's moving to Houston so I'm thinking of trying to apply to Rice also for a transfer. I do have a question: does anyone know how ther recruitments are from Rice with respect to big banks in the Houston region? Do they recruit a lot of ppl from Rice, since it's basically the best school in the region? Thanks!
So basically, what do you guys think should I pick Cornell or Rice (assuming I get into Rice)...I would like to go into ib and of course we all aim (at least most of us) for big banks...Thanks for the input...and sorry if question seems stupid.
Cornell by far
All the large banks recruit at Cornell, can't say the same about Rice.
what about the branches of the large banks in the Houston region? I know that companies are sometimes regional in terms of recruitment (example: Fedex in Memphis recruites most from U.of Memphis and not Vanderbilt in Nashville athough it is a much better school)...I know that fedex is not a bank but I wonder if it's the same w/ big banks? Thanks!
Hey man, I'm sorry, but big banks just don't recruit Rice students. (Maybe regional banks...) That's FedEx, BBs give a shit about education. If you go to Rice, just try to stand out. They only want the top talent, so a lot go to Cornell.(I don't know about Rice)
Hey, Rice might not be bad after all... There will be less competition. Therefore, it'll be way easier to get placed at a major BB firm. Cornell on the other hand, is going to be the total opposite. For that reason, it's going to be hell competing to get that interview.
I am from Houston and Rice is really big there. Networking is easy and you get your foot through the door at a lot of major banks in the city. I dont think its that big outside of TX though. I know a lot of Rice kids and most are not into banking. UT Austin has more kids going into banking and they have suprisingly a lot more help breaking into it then Rice kids do.
In the US News and World Report, Cornell is ranked 12th, while Rice is 17th. As far as quality of the institutions go, I don't think there's a huge difference between Cornell and Rice. The difference is in recruiting; Cornell just happens to be much more of a target school than Rice.
Would you advise a Harvard admit to choose Boston College instead, because there is less competition at BC than at Harvard?
How about choosing Bear Stearns over Goldman, because at Bear it's easier to be at the top of the class?
Purposely aiming lower, with the intention of standing out amongst the weaker competition, is rarely good advice.
Yeah, but Rice is no BC.
i'm currently in houston.
rice will open up options down here in houston but you'll be limited if you want to get into IB. for example, as a pool you'll compete and get the same looks as ivies for houston positions but not for the nyc positions.
Greedy Gilmore is giving out a lot of misinformation. This year all of the big banks recruited at Rice, and I know that 10-12 people accepted full-time BB (front-office) offers. GS, MS, Citi, JPM, etc. all recruit. The recruiting is mainly for the Houston office. Also, there are not a huge number of people that are interested in IB, so the chances of getting an interview are fairly high.
If your parents are going to be in Houston then just go to Rice. Like Bankerbot said, Rice is gold in Houston. And the plus side is that there arent a lot of cats there that are even interested in banking at all. Houstonians tend to think that Rice=Ivy League.
I'd say go to Cornell ;) Gotta get away sometime.
Cornell has more connections for IB, however Rice is known as the Harvard of the south so if you plan on making a home in the south, Rice would not be a bad idea. Bottom line is that either school will give you a great education.
I go to Cornell. Are you referring to the AEM program or are you talking about the Finance/Real Estate concentration in the Hotel School?
I can't say much about Rice, but there are a lot of kids trying to get into IB here. All the banks come here to recruit and makes the internship process a lot easier. Also, I'm sure it'll be easier to get into some MM or boutique banks in NYC. Cornell brand carries far in Wall St.
Just to let you know, I also transfered from the Boston area my Sophomore year, so if you have any q's about Cornell, send me an email =)
Rice has its plusses and minuses when it comes to IB. The big banks all recruit there, yes, but only for the Houston offices. If you want a position in New York you have to do it on your own. If you don't like energy and don't like Houston then Rice isn't the place for you.
Rice also doesn't really have that many undergraduate business/finance/accounting classes, so you will be at a disadvantage when it comes to technical questions in interviews. Also, the IB community/people interested in it isn't very large at Rice. This means that the career services doesn't really know what it is doing and can't help you out with interview advice, exploding offers, etc.
While there are a lot of Rice people at offices in Houston, the vast majority of bankers you will find are from UT. When it comes down to it, if they have to choose between a kid from Rice and a kid from UT, it will probably end up being the kid from UT.
This being said, if you are interested in banking and your resume is pretty good, you will have a lot easier time getting every first round and probably second round interview if you commit yourself to preparing for the interviews, since, as was said, the pool isn't as strong. Whether or not this helps you actually get the job though, is up in the air.
hmmm...thanks for the input!...I'm surprised that some of you thinks that I'm a guy...I'm actually a GIRL!...i can feel male domination in the field :-)
my feeling is that even if I go to Cornell and decide later that I want to work in Houston, I'd probably have the same shot as Rice kids, what do you think?
crazybanana, wow, I'm so glad to find a cornellian here...yes, I got into AEM, not the Hotel School...I'll write you an email soon!
I'm glad to hear that you are leaning more towards Cornell and AEM is a great program. There are bunch of Cornellians on this site! =) I would love to answer any of q regarding school.
Good luck!
I'm a Cornellian too. They seem to recruit pretty heavily here. A pretty decent percentage of people got offers.
out of the engineers who interviewed.
Go to Cornell. You will never want to work in Houston after you get a taste of the east coast. What's in Houston? Honestly?
Thanks! u know I got into Umich also...should I pick this over Cornell? Just wondering what the thoughts are on this...I like Cornell but I think Ross is better ranked although when I visited there, the quality of the students weren't as high as I thought they should be.
What do you guys think?
