Rising Junior -didn't like tech is it too late for IB S26?

To keep it simple, I’m a rising junior at a non-target who was planning on recruiting for IB but landed an opportunity at a well known fintech and thought I was certain about not doing IB. Now, at the end of my internship, I realize that IB would've been a better fit, culture, and work, but I’m scared it's too late. I still want to recruit, but I don't want to waste my time if there are no real opportunities. I have a return offer for where I was last summer, so worst comes to worst, Im doing that.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not too late to pivot to IB for Summer 2026, but you'll need to act quickly and strategically. Here's what you should focus on:

  1. Networking Aggressively: Start reaching out to alumni, professionals, and anyone in your network who can connect you to boutique or middle-market banks. Smaller firms often have less structured recruiting timelines and may still have opportunities available.

  2. Leverage Your Fintech Experience: Highlight transferable skills from your fintech internship, such as financial analysis, teamwork, and problem-solving. Frame your experience as a unique perspective you bring to IB.

  3. Prepare for Technicals and Behaviorals: Dedicate time to mastering technical skills and preparing for behavioral interviews. Use resources like the WSO Investment Banking Interview Prep to get up to speed.

  4. Target Boutiques and Regional Banks: Many boutique and regional banks recruit later or on an ad-hoc basis. These firms can be a great entry point into IB and may still have openings for Summer 2026.

  5. Consider a Multi-Year Plan: If you can't secure an IB internship for Summer 2026, take the fintech return offer and aim for full-time IB recruiting during your senior year. Alternatively, explore a one-year Master's in Finance program at a target school to reset your recruiting timeline.

While the timeline is tight, it's not impossible. Hustle, network, and prepare thoroughly to maximize your chances.
