Rising Sophomore trying to break into BB / Internship advice — ?

My stats: international student, first gen - low income, studying Econ & DataSci at a liberal arts school that’s elite but not a target — listed as a t20 US school in Forbes, 3.9 GPA so far (thx, Addy), technically qualify as diversity (F and LGBT) but ideally don’t wanna pursue this track — it just feels unfair

Having finished my freshman year, I’m interning at a fintech firm in Chicago as a data analyst rn. Networked my way into it after they said they usually consider upperclassmen and speedran the technicals in 2 months to crush the data project interview. (There was literally some possibility of being homeless with no money for the summer because I can’t go back to my country for visa & political reasons and can’t work in the US if it’s not related to my major, so I GRINDED for that job) Everything went well, though, and now I’m working on pretty important projects that would look great on my resume while getting paid well!

Now, what do I do my sophomore year? Are there any internships I could pursue as a rising junior to look good when it’s time to apply for BBs (AND have income in the summer)? I know big 4 has discovery programs, what’s your opinion of them?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, you're already off to a strong start with your fintech internship and impressive GPA. Here's a roadmap to maximize your sophomore year and position yourself for BB internships:

1. Sophomore Year Strategy

  • Networking: Continue building your network. Focus on alumni from your school, especially those in finance or data-related roles. Use LinkedIn, cold emails, and informational interviews to connect with professionals at BBs, boutiques, and other finance firms. Mention your fintech experience and interest in IB.
  • Campus Involvement: Take on leadership roles in finance, data science, or diversity-related clubs. This demonstrates initiative and leadership, which BBs value.
  • Skill Development: Sharpen your technical skills. Learn financial modeling, Excel, and PowerPoint. Consider taking WSO courses or similar resources to prepare for IB technicals.

2. Sophomore Summer Internship Options

  • Boutique Investment Banks: Many regional or industry-specific boutiques hire sophomores. These roles provide relevant experience and are a stepping stone to BBs.
  • Big 4 Discovery Programs: These programs are great for networking and learning about the industry but may not be as impactful as direct finance internships. If you pursue one, supplement it with networking and technical skill-building.
  • Private Equity or Venture Capital Internships: Smaller PE or VC firms often hire sophomores. These roles can be highly relevant and impressive on your resume.
  • Corporate Finance Roles: Internships in the finance division of F500 companies can also be valuable, especially if they involve financial analysis or modeling.

3. Application Timeline

  • Start Early: Many sophomore internships begin recruiting in February-April of your sophomore spring. Begin preparing your resume and applications now.
  • Leverage Diversity Programs: While you may feel hesitant about diversity programs, they are a legitimate way to level the playing field. Programs like SEO, MLT, and BB diversity initiatives can provide access to opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

4. Resume Building

  • Highlight your fintech internship, focusing on quantifiable achievements (e.g., "Developed a data analysis model that improved efficiency by X%").
  • Include leadership roles, technical skills, and any relevant coursework.

5. Income Considerations

  • If income is a priority, prioritize internships that pay well, such as boutique IBs, corporate finance roles, or fintech/data science positions. Many smaller firms may not have structured programs but are open to hiring sophomores for meaningful roles.

6. Final Tips

  • Follow Up: Stay in touch with your fintech colleagues and managers. They can be valuable references or even offer you a return role.
  • Prepare for Junior Year Recruiting: Use your sophomore summer to refine your story, practice technicals, and build relationships with BB recruiters.

You're on the right track, and with continued effort, you'll be well-positioned for BB internships. Keep grinding, and don't hesitate to leverage every opportunity available to you!
