Ross vs Stern Undergrad
Hi,I got into both of these schools and trying to decide. My long term goals are to get into IB at a top BB firm in NYC, and then break into the buyside. I know Ross obviously has the edge for social life, but I'm more concerned about the placements. I feel like Stern would place me better into internships and full-time positions. Can I get some advice please?
Both schools place well as long as you put in the work. At the end of the day, this decision comes to different factors such as cost, culture of the university and other personal factors that might sway your decision.
I would also say to keep in mind that Stern doesn't necessarily place better than Ross. There is that edge that you're in NYC and if you're able to manage to get solid internships during the year while at Stern that's a huge resume booster. However, if you look at analyst classes for EBs/BBs or even those post-undergrad PE analyst programs, Ross kids are everywhere and make up a decent portion of each, while the same can't be said for Stern across the board. Michigan also has firms nearby where you could do during-the-year internships such as boutique IBs due to the fact that Ann Arbor is relatively still a decent-sized "city".
Full disclosure, I don't go to either but have friends at each or who have graduated from them and in addition, a quick LinkedIn search can back up everything stated above.
Idk how to search specifically for the most recent FT class, but when I enter the criteria as those who are currently employed by GS/MS/JPM, O get the results that Stern has 1500 people, whereas Ross only has 200. That’s a big gap, so idk how reliable linkedin is anyway.
Also did a search for Blackstone. Similar results (50ish Stern, 20ish Ross). I wish these schools published how many students got offers from which company. Stern doesn’t even have an employment report at all! I’m so undecided idk what to do. I love UMich’s social scene but so many people tell me I got better chances from NYU. I hope my waitlist from Dartmouth and Cornell works out. (Though many say Stern is better than Cornell AEM anyway, Dartmouth would be amazing).
At the end of the day, the difference between those schools will not make or break you. Whether it's Stern, Ross, Cornell or Dartmouth, you can make it into literally any bank or PE analyst program so long as you work your ass off in college. Good luck with your decision, can't go wrong with either!
True story
The no brainier here is that both schools will place incredibly well and its an amazing opportunity to have both as options. The decision I see here is just if you want the more "Rah Rah" social atmosphere Ross offers or the convenience of networking that Stern offers. We're all different and once you figure out what type of college experience you're looking for the rest will follow through. Personally I would choose Ross only because I valued an engaging social experience before committing a few years into banking. With that being said, I did attend a Big Ten school (Rutgers, Penn State, Ohio State) so I may be biased. In the end, you can't go wrong with either OP and you'll have an enormous amount of options at either school. Best of luck.
Hey, I'm a high school junior aiming to go to a target school for undergrad. I was wondering what your stats were. Like your SAT/ACT Score, GPA, class rank, etc.
Thanks!
Everyone has more fun at Ross. Stern is a bunch of hardos all gunning for IB while Ross has a diverse class including a disproportionate number of sorority chicks.
I definitely see more Stern kids in IB / PE / HF, particularly HF. Obviously anecdotal and I'm not sure the variance in overall class sizes, but that's one data point for you. Both are great schools though and as others have said, if you work hard at either, you'll be fine.
