Running out of alumni to email for IB

Semi-target, I've been emailing school alumni and response rates have been really bad. I use the same template that seniors at my school used who have successfully recruited, and it seems like it's been a common theme this year with the no responses. Should I start emailing non-alumni? I'm getting kinda worried as interviews are going out and I'm hearing no word from the emails.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, expanding your outreach beyond alumni is a smart move, especially if you're running out of alumni to contact. Here are some actionable tips to improve your networking strategy:

  1. Email Non-Alumni: Many professionals are willing to help students even if they don’t share the same alma mater. In fact, some non-alumni might even be more empathetic to your situation, especially if they also came from a non-target or semi-target background. Focus on finding common ground, such as shared interests, past experiences, or even hobbies, to make your emails stand out.

  2. Personalize Your Emails: Avoid using a generic template. Professionals can easily spot copy-paste emails, and it’s a major turn-off. Mention something specific about their background, such as a project they worked on, their career path, or even a shared interest (e.g., sports, clubs, etc.). This can significantly increase your response rate.

  3. Optimize Timing: Send your emails at optimal times, such as early mornings or late evenings, when professionals are more likely to check their inboxes. Avoid sending emails during peak work hours.

  4. Follow Up Strategically: If you don’t get a response, wait a week and send a polite follow-up email. Some professionals intentionally wait to see who follows up, as it demonstrates persistence and genuine interest. Limit your follow-ups to three attempts.

  5. Leverage LinkedIn: Use LinkedIn to identify professionals in your target firms. Search for people in roles you’re interested in and send them a connection request with a brief, personalized note. Once connected, you can follow up with a message to request a quick call.

  6. Broaden Your Search: Don’t limit yourself to just investment banking professionals. Reach out to people in related fields like private equity, corporate finance, or consulting. They might have valuable insights or connections that can help you.

  7. Track Your Efforts: Create an Excel sheet to track who you’ve contacted, their responses, and follow-up dates. This will help you stay organized and ensure you’re not missing any opportunities.

Remember, networking is a numbers game, and persistence is key. Keep refining your approach, and don’t hesitate to reach out to non-alumni. You’ve got this!
