Same thread or new thread!?!?!? Super weird situation

Hey guys. So I cold emailed an MD and he responded by CC'ing his associate so he could "share some thoughts on the group". Should I email the associate within the same email thread that the MD replied to, or start a new thread with the subject line "[Name of MD] – Referral"??

Weird thing is, I've actually cold-emailed that associate before and followed up a couple times but have gotten no responses from him

What should I do??

Send two reply emails. Send one to only the MD thanking him for the referral. Reply to the email again but take out the MD (only to the associate) asking to chat if they have time. That way the MD doesn't have to get your emails with the associate, but the associate can see the original referral.
