Scheduled Call with MD - Offer or Rejection?

Finished last rounds of interviews with a boutique firm in the middle of March and was delayed month after month due to COVID. Didn't have any new updates from the MD who was running the hiring process besides more delays via email, until I emailed them to say that I had one offer and another final round this week. Got an email back from the MD today stating that he wanted to "catch-up" over the phone later this week so we scheduled a call. Would there be any potential to finally receive the offer on this call, or an just an update on their timeline moving forward?

This firm knows they are my top choice and commended me for doing well in all rounds back in March, but I didn't know if getting an offer from another firm and possibly another one coming pushed them to make an offer to me at this point.

I would say there’s a pretty high chance you get an offer here.

Think about this. An MD’a time is precious. He’s not going to schedule a call with you, just to tell you to fuck off. I think the worst case scenario is he goes over the details with you on a final round of interview(s), which would occur before any offer. I think that’s probably unlikely and the call will be to give you an offer.

Obviously, I’m a stupid intern, but good luck. You should see this as a positive sign.

 

He won’t be putting an offer in a casual email like that because it is very frowned upon to put that in writing unless you have authorization to do so. Given the delays you mentioned I’m going to be a little contrarian and say you won’t get an offer. However, I believe he will at least try to put you at the forefront of the round table and give you some visibility on the process. I don’t think an offer is completely off the table but don’t bank on it.

 

Well yeah whenever I got offers the MDs always say something vague like that to keep you guessing and then pop the offer on you and try to get you to commit out of nervousness. You should let him know it's your first choice if it is like you said and let him know as soon as you get the paperwork you will be happy to end your other processes. Don't end other processes or let other offers expire without paperwork. Also there's a small chance he's calling to get a better idea of your timeline so be ready for that

MDs pride themselves on their negotiation/persuasion skills so just prepare how you are going to react beforehand and stick to the script because you're in over your head in these situations.
