Texas Semi-Target to IB

Hi I'm currently a student at Texas School actively recruiting for IB in Houston and in NYC (I genuinely like O & G).

I wanted to ask if networking is still crucial even for Houston or if one call per bank is enough!

Networking remains a critical component of breaking into investment banking, especially for students from semi-target schools. Based on the most helpful WSO content, Houston IB recruiting does place a strong emphasis on networking, particularly given the regional focus on oil & gas. While Houston banks may have a slightly more accessible culture compared to NYC, one call per bank is unlikely to be sufficient. Building multiple touchpoints with bankers, especially alumni or those with ties to your school, can significantly improve your chances.

For Houston, schools like UT Austin, Rice, and Texas A&M are considered strong feeders, but even candidates from these schools often need to network extensively. A single call might help you get on someone's radar, but follow-ups, coffee chats, and demonstrating genuine interest in O&G are key to standing out.

For NYC, the competition is even fiercer, and networking is absolutely essential. Cold emails, informational interviews, and leveraging any alumni connections are crucial to breaking into the scene.

In short, aim for multiple meaningful interactions per bank, not just one call. This will help you build rapport and increase the likelihood of someone pushing your resume forward.
