How low is your overall? I feel like it might not be a problem, but is also somewhat misleading.
If you overall GPA is a good amount lower than your major GPA, they might question why one is so much higher than the other.
I would go ahead and do so. Sure it is misleading, but it is accurate - legal, just not ethical. Also they won't check on your gpa + transcript etc until the bg check which comes after an offer.
This is just my opinion, for what it's worth. However, I've managed to get internship offers from two top-tier investment banks and a top 3 consulting firm.
One of three things is true: - Your overall GPA is high (>3.7): the 4.0 major GPA won't matter that much. - Your overall GPA is mid (3.4-3.7): you can go either way, but you may lose an opportunity if they find out and don't trust you - Your overall GPA is low (3.4): unless you have a good reason for the low GPA, putting 4.0 as your major GPA based on one class is basically a lie, and I'd avoid it
I disagree with UtEnergyIB. All of the top-tier firms I've applied to have asked for an unofficial transcript during the application process.
From my experience all the top-tier BB's didn't ask for a transcript. Simply OCR (Resume, Cover Letter) + Online App (didn't ask for transcript) -- First Round -- Super Day -- Offer --- BG Check. This was for FT recruiting, i can't remember SA. I would go with mattsh's advice

If you have to ask don't do it.
I spoke to a few recruiters from BBs and they informed me that they do not care what your major GPA is. They focus more on cumulative GPA to show how "well rounded" you are.
On a sidenote, I think Wells Fargo might be the only large bank that doesnt do background checks on their analysts. None of the guys on my floor have had one, anyways.

Hey all, so I am a science student (Minor in commerce/finance) who just finished his third year at a non-target canadian uni. My cGPA is 3.60/4.00 (3.55 really tho), while my finance/commerce gpa is 3.97/4.00. I am thinking of putting both of these on my resume for recruiting in the IBD sector; do you think its a good idea to put both down? Also, could I get into one of the BBs (even for a summer stint in 2018)? Any advice would be helpful :)
Yeah its normal to put cumulative and technical gpas. I wonder why there isn't much weight attached to technical gpa as opposed to cumulative. You would think recruiters value performance in business school/finance classes rather than overall performance including libarts/core curriculum.
GPA is a much an indication of intelligence as it is of work ethic. Someone who only put time and effort in succeeding in finance / interesting classes is much more likely to do cut corners when at 3am turning a book for the 87th time than someone who made sure to do well in all classes. Simple as that.
You getting into one of the BBs depends on a variety of factors. I would also be careful with rounding. 3.55 = 3.6 but not 3.60.
