Should I change my looks for IB?
Hello guys, already did internships in IB but would like to know if my looks hurt my chances during interview.
I rock the buzzcut, wear silver rings and have a 2-weeks beard. I go to the gym everyday so I am bigger than the average guy. And I am not gonna lie sometimes I can give "skinhead" vibes.
My dad always tells me to let my hair grow and shave. He thinks that my style is unprofessional (he works in public sector). Basically he wants me to look like the average 20+ yrs old schmo.
But I dont know, it would be painful to give up on my style considering girls like it too and it also became part of my persona
Would you be disappointed if someone came up in an interview with this style?
PS: I take good care of my skin and body and wear tailored suits though. And no tattoos etc no nothing
Please give me advices on this. Thanks!
Banking is still very much a conservative, professional environment grooming/ dressing wise. I came from the military and it honestly felt pretty similar in terms of appearance norms. You’re fine with the buzz cut, I don’t think you need to grow it out into a slick back (half the people in banking don’t have any hair left anyway). I’d shave for recruiting. Once you get the offer, a well kept beard is probably fine, a few people have them but everyone definitely shaved for recruiting. And I’d lose the rings at work. Anecdotally, one guy in our cohort wore jewelry and he got zero offers. Obviously can’t draw causation from that, but it’s a data point and I personally heard a VP refer to him as “that guy with the pinky ring” after we got our offers. I know it sucks to have to change who you are, but it is what it is and you’ve just got to choose what hills you’re going to die on.
Completely agree with this. On the opposite of the skinhead side, I know someone who dressed like a menswear fashion model (excessively baggy pants, skin tight shirts), and he was talked about for months and then eventually pulled aside by a senior and asked to dress more professionally. I have also done interviews where a candidate had a mustache and everyone in the superday review called him "the mustache guy". Not what you want people remembering you for.
Keep the style and rings for the weekends, but your dad is broadly right OP
