Skills that make your application more competitive?
I am 19 years old currently on a gap year and am looking for skills to learn for my CV that will help me land roles in competitive industries. I have tones of spare time but also I don't want to waste time learning a skill that will not benefit my CV.
If anyone has any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated
A European language
Any particular language? or does it not really matter?
Useful ones for finance would probably be French, German, Dutch, or a Nordic / Scandinavian language. You don’t need them for your day to day job, but they definitely stand your CV out when applying for that first job after analyst and a lot of places have it as a preferred skill (some roles required).
If you don't mind me asking, why'd you take a gap year?
Mainly due to Covid. I didn't want to waste a year of uni just doing online lessons. Also I had changed my mind on what I wanted to study last minute so it made sense for me to reapply next year.
I'd add to everyone else's comments that you need both hard and soft skills. For soft skills, take a look in the job description, and pick out experiences to include in your CV and covering letters. In terms of hard skills, I would say it's great to include interpretation and presentation of data, as well as management skills/qualifications.
