SMU COX Transfer

Just got into SMU Cox as a transfer and am strongly considering attending. I'm aware of their presence in Houston (improving in NYC) and the placements out of ALTS. Although its a great finance program in general, ALTS is obviously the goal but I am worried as a transfer. Does anyone know how this process works as a transfer and if it's even possible? For context, I'll be at SMU for 5-6 semesters (sophomore). Also as I have a focus on Energy/O&G, I am looking to join Spindletop, any insight on this would be appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about transferring into SMU Cox and aiming for the ALTS program:

ALTS Program Application Process:

  1. Eligibility and Preparation:

    • Your ALTS prep begins at the beginning of your sophomore year.
    • Training sessions and mock interviews commence for the selection process that takes place at the end of sophomore year (March-May).
  2. Application Screening:

    • General application screening requires a GPA > 3.7.
    • Relevant experience in finance is beneficial, though some non-business school students get in each year.
    • Participation in mock interviews and networking with current ALTS students is crucial.
  3. Interview Process:

    • After passing the application screening, you will be scheduled for 3-4 interviews with current ALTS members.
    • Interviews progress from behavioral questions to technical questions.
    • Candidates are ranked, and the top ~75 move on to the final round.
  4. Final Round:

    • The final round is akin to a superday experience, involving 3 hours of back-to-back interviews with former ALTS members, the head of the program, and the head of the finance department.
    • Approximately 50 students are selected from this round.

Transfer Student Considerations:

  • As a transfer student, you will need to integrate quickly and start preparing for the ALTS application process as soon as possible.
  • Ensure you meet the GPA requirement and start networking with current ALTS students early.
  • Participate in mock interviews and relevant finance-related activities to bolster your application.

Focus on Energy/O&G and Spindletop:

  • SMU has a strong presence in Houston, particularly in Energy IB.
  • Joining Spindletop, a student organization focused on the energy sector, can provide valuable networking opportunities and industry insights.
  • Engaging with Spindletop can also enhance your profile for the ALTS program, especially given your interest in Energy/O&G.

Additional Insights:

  • The ALTS class is intense, with projects ranging from simple proforma modeling to full-scale M&A, IPO, and LBO modeling.
  • The class includes guest speakers from various high-profile positions, offering excellent networking opportunities.
  • There is a 100% placement rate within the ALTS class, with many graduates securing jobs in IB, particularly in Houston's Energy sector.

By focusing on these steps and leveraging the resources available at SMU Cox, you can enhance your chances of getting into the ALTS program and achieving your career goals in Energy/O&G.
