Social medias pit of meaninglessness

Do you guys think that social media or any quick gratification through the use of easily assessable technology is ruining meaning and purpose in our lives?

I know its an obvious answer but I feel as if my day gets worse when I check instagram or twitter and see people doing “fun” things while I’m slaving away at the computer. I know that I’m doing the best for my future and that I don’t need to be doing crazy things 24/7 but holy shit does it deject me.

Regardless, this also pans into other industries such as tech, the medical field, engineering, etc. How do med students grind through 8-10+ years of schooling nowadays?? I just feel like before everyone had an unneeded social presence, meaning and focus was less of an issue due to us not knowing what we’re missing.

I also get that deleting social media is an option but it also puts you at a disadvantage for not receiving the latest news or being out of touch with certain social trends.

Thoughts?

I'd argue this is a massive misconception: if you don't believe there's anything meaningful on social media then it's worth deleting...all of those trends are ridiculously stupid, and in some way or other, it all ties back to marketing and subliminally getting you to buy stuff

There's been plenty of researchers and scientists who have argued that there is absolutely no benefit/practical need to have a social presence (Cal Newport comes to mind if you're interested)

I wound up deleting all the social media apps on my phone, so I can only access them through browser--that way, I can still view my home page, but it's less conducive to endless scrolling

I'd 100% delete the apps--I find that even just after a couple days of not using social media I'm way happier without it

This is the way - there is no intrinsic value of social media, but a crap ton of negative externalities because we are not meant to know this damn much about each other. It’s actually crazy, we know everyone’s thoughts, desires, locations, everything at once - it paralyzes you simply because you are thrown so much useless information. I like to think the future is trending from this information fatigue - but that’s another discussion.

Once you’ve realize social media companies entire business model is dependent on advertisement, you understand that every social media is essentially a digital commercial, so unless you’re shopping for something: clothes, food, sex, etc - you don’t need to be on it. If you use social as like some online archive of your life, you can delete the apps and only redownload to post your update, but let’s be real, people post updates all the time because they think other people care. They don’t, and artificial metrics like likes / retweets is a social media gimmick to keep you online longer to eventually buy something…

You should not be getting your news from social media. These “trends” are useless you are building a business that needs social media to…you guessed it…advertise itself. The rest is just brainwashing
