Sophomore Year Internship Timeline

I'm currently a freshman at a non-target. Recently, I've been ripping applications for search funds on Searchfunder and compiling a list of local boutique investment banks and search funds to cold-email once the holidays are over, asking about internships for this summer 2025 (my freshman summer).

My question is: When should I start networking for internships for next summer 2026 (my sophomore summer)? Ideally, right now, a bank/search fund would get back to me quickly about an internship this summer, I'd get the internship, and I then would try to network with people at bigger investment banks/firms (i.e. ING Bank, BNY, BNP, SocGen, Metlife Investments, PGIM, etc.), talking about my freshman summer internship. However, in this best-case scenario, I would have to wait until at least this summer to be able to talk about the internship at the local bank. I've heard that the bigger banks' applications for next year's summer 2026 are all open now. If I'm not networking until this summer, how would I utilize the network to apply for next year's (sophomore summer) internships if the applications will all be closed/full?

Also, if I'm wrong about timelines and I have a substantial amount of time until applications for summer 2026 internships at the aforementioned firms open, when should I start networking? I'm assuming most BB and EB will open applications for summer 2027 (my junior summer) next winter 2025-2026 (my sophomore winter). To get both a non-BB internship for summer 2026 (my sophomore summer) and a BB internship for summer (2027), will I just have to network a ton, networking for both years' internships at the same time during fall and winter 2025 (my sophomore fall + winter)?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you should approach your timeline and networking strategy:

  1. Networking for Summer 2026 (Sophomore Summer):

    • Start networking now. Even if you don’t have a freshman summer internship yet, you can still reach out to professionals at larger firms to build relationships. Use informational interviews to learn about their roles and the firm, and keep them updated on your progress once you secure a freshman summer internship.
    • Applications for sophomore summer internships at BBs, EBs, and MMs typically open early, often in the summer or fall of your sophomore year (2025). Networking now ensures you have a strong foundation when applications open.
  2. Freshman Summer Internship (2025):

    • Continue applying to local boutiques, search funds, and other opportunities. If you secure an internship, leverage it during your networking conversations for sophomore summer roles. Even if you don’t have an internship yet, focus on building relationships and showing your eagerness to learn.
  3. Sophomore Fall/Winter 2025:

    • During this period, you’ll likely be networking for both sophomore summer 2026 and junior summer 2027 internships. This is common, as BBs and EBs often recruit for junior summer internships (2027) as early as winter 2025-2026. Be prepared to juggle networking for both timelines simultaneously.
  4. Key Takeaways:

    • Networking Timeline: Start now and continue consistently. Build relationships early, even if you don’t have an internship yet.
    • Application Timeline: Sophomore summer 2026 applications will likely open in summer/fall 2025. Junior summer 2027 applications will open in winter 2025-2026.
    • Strategy: Focus on securing a freshman summer internship now, but don’t wait to network for sophomore summer roles. Use your freshman internship experience to strengthen your conversations with larger firms.

By starting early and maintaining consistent communication with your network, you’ll position yourself well for both sophomore and junior summer opportunities.
