Sophomores applying to SA
Sophomores applying to SA positions offered generally to Juniors:
- If the sophomore gets say more than one offer, and takes bank A and turns down bank B. Is he/she blacklisted for bank B for junior summer/senior FT?
- If sophomore got interviews, and gets rejected due to bad performance, would this potentially blacklist the sophomore for junior summer/senior FT? (Thought process: "if they don't hire you for this summer, why should they hire you for next summer?")
- On that note, to what extent do old record and documents affect the current sophs/freshmen in the future? i.e. sophomore apply for a sophomore summer program, messes up interview or submitted a badly formatted resume- would banks dig out the records the following year and use them for or against the candidate?
Thanks!
No to all 3. Alot of change can happen in 1 year. No one has the time to dig out records I would think.
what about just the first one?
turn down a bank once = they'll blacklist you forever (or at least 1-2 years for the same position)?
1. No you don't get black listed if you turn down an offer.
2. If you don't interview well sophmore, there is no reason they won't give you a second shot, assuming your resume has only improved. Granted, if the same person comes for interviews and remembers you as a complete retard, it will impact your ability to get future jobs.
3. These documents are kept by HR, but no one has enough time to look at that stuff. Only in the case that the same people are involved in the process and remember you from the previous year can this hurt you.
All this being said, most banks WILL NOT interview sophmores for junior SA positions. This is for one simple reason, the junior year SA position is a summer long interview for a full time job. Its relatively useless to have a sophmore since you would have to give them 2 summer internships before you would get any real work and commitment out of them. Banks which do hire sophmores usually put them through very specific sophmore focused programs separate from everyone else.
PowerMonkey:
Based on what you've said, is it better to apply anyway "to get your name out there" or just network this year and apply next year to avoid bad impressions?
Why aren't you guys applying to sophomore programs? Rotational programs are great ways to figure out what you want to do and even more so what you don't want to do? I know UBS has one, and I know that at least 3 or more banks have them also.
im applying to both.
Yea I'm referring to sophomore rotational programs as well. I'm applying to a couple-- so I wasn't sure whether applying to multiple programs will backfire.
Network as a sophmore and apply to sophmore programs. Applying to a program which you don't meet the qualifications for annoys people and makes them throw away your resume for that year. So, you get no added benefit to apply to SA jobs as a sophmore. Networking is always good, get your face out there, meet people, get their cards, and remember who they are for the next time around, even if you have to write it down. As a sophmore, get any finance job you can, including but not limited to small time PWM jobs, rotational programs, and regional internships.
In summary, get a sophmore level internship, network, and don't clutter my (metaphorically) inbox with applications for a job you can't have.
