Stick out IB for one year or try to bail right now? Dream job would be at Xbox.
Just hit the desk and I can definitely say that IB isn’t for me. I did an internship in IB and screwed up my health, so I recruited full time for consulting, a few FRP programs, and IB because I needed to get interviews, and I only got 1 offer—an IB analyst role. Of course, I took it because I couldn’t afford to lose an opportunity that came by after so much difficulty, but I really want to do something else where I can be involved in other areas of life—volunteering, exercising, continuing education (CFA, Masters, part-time MBA, etc.)
This is what I want—a corporate strategy role at Xbox involving one or both of the following responsibilities:
1) Build relationships with interesting new gaming studios with great ideas and bring them into the Xbox universe to give them a platform, funding, and resources to develop amazing games unencumbered by current market trends (no MOBA, Battle Royale games unless it’s something the game studio wants to actually develop).
2) Integrate them into the Xbox platform to develop long-term plans for the studios—something like planning out a long-term schedule for game/expansion rollouts, brainstorming ideas for new games while they are working on current games, launching onto new platforms, etc.
The thing is, I can’t even get a bloody interview at Microsoft, let alone Xbox, which doesn’t have any jobs to apply to.
Should I try to apply for similar roles not in gaming in order to develop a relevant skillset which could be used later on? If so, what?
Project management? Strategy & Operations? Which companies should I look out for and how do I start a search for this?
Should I apply for the “FT 2021” roles on Handshake and LinkedIn which are clearly tailored for college seniors or just general roles? The thing about the general roles is that they require like 7+ years of work experience, and the “FT 2021” roles sometimes limit acceptable candidates to college seniors ande out there who don’t currently have jobs, but I have a very specific idea of what I could potentially do, and I would like to hear your thoughts on how to get there.
I know banking is hard, but it’s supposed to be hard. Think 20+ years in the future, what do you want to do? You’ll have kids and a family. Don’t be short sighted, banking will/can open doors that let you live the life you want down the road
Are you 12 years old? Why are you focused on specifically xbox.
Sony would be a great place to work as well but they’re pretty close-minded when it comes to democratizing access of their games to consumers who don’t want to buy their specific console. Same deal with Nintendo. EA, Blizzard, etc., are basically just greedy corporates who’ve lost their ability to spearhead innovation, but Xbox is different. It’s not just a hardware developer anymore, it’s a platform which offers games as a service in addition to the traditional models of purchasing games on PC and console, and that’s why I would like to work there. Not to mention, they don’t actively try to dive into saturated markets and offer their studios the freedom to create games without restraints from shareholders and a need for short-term returns.
Should I get the new Xbox or ps5?

As a kid that went the entrepreneurial route right out of college and looking to get back into finance, I can tell you that the IB experience on the resume opens doors that nothing else really can. Every single job posting you will see will say they are looking for IB experience. The intangibles that come with the job just are exponential. I would recommend sticking it out, grab that bonus after year 1, and then pursue the dream job.
